Description

Named after the eye-catching crest on the front of its head – its name translates to ‘single-crested lizard’ – Monolophosaurus is a carnivorous theropod that dates back to the Mid Jurassic period. This genus is a relative of the fearsome Allosaurus, but smaller in stature at approximately 5m in length and weighing from 450kg to 680kg.

Discovery

Monolophosaurus was discovered in 1984 by the celebrated Chinese paleontologist Dong Zhiming, although the specimen – a near-complete skeleton found in the Junggar Basin, north-west China – was not formally described until 1993. Zhiming’s discovery is currently the only known Monolophosaurus specimen and is notable for the large crest that runs almost the entire length of its skull.

Paleoecology

This genus lived around 165 million years ago in Xinjiang, China, and is believed to have hunted in packs close to lakes and other areas of water, where it lived alongside – and preyed upon – a variety of pterosaurs and dinosaurs including the sauropod Bellusaurus.
